bridging the gender play gap
As parents, we noticed a difference in toys that were marketed to boys and girls. Boys' toys and clothing celebrated action, girls' toys and clothing celebrated beauty and nurture. But all children should have the opportunity to benefit from all play genres.
Hart and Hero was born out of a need to bridge the gender play gap. We wanted to design a gender-neutral capsule playroom collection that would give children the opportunity to discover foundational play genres that they had been locked out of due to social stereotypes. Like… a doll stroller that wasn't pink. Like gender-neutral and empowering superhero apparel.

Changing the Future with Kalvin Bridgewater
In a park in Dallas, a group of fathers is making waves. A man with muscular biceps pushes a stroller with one hand and carries a toddler in the other. A Dad with dreads crouches next to his daughter, feeding her a jar of applesauce. Childish laughter as a dad plays peekaboo. This is the Daddy Stroller Social Club (DSSC), founded by Kalvin Bridgewater—a community where dads of color gather to support each other and connect with their children.
Hi there! We're Chanie and Musya, the co-founders of Hart and Hero. As moms, we've felt the frustration of the gender play gap. We noticed something curious in the toy aisle: while there were hundreds of doll strollers available, they were all pink. Boys were being pushed out of the family-oriented pretend play space. Why was that? Countless conversations led us to realize that at the root was society’s fear of ‘soft’. An association of weakness with nurturing. Giving a boy a doll would make him weak. Boys should be tough and aggressive, not gentle and nurturing. We knew that that narrative had to change. Caring was anything but weak. Emotional wellness is a strength, not a weakness. And so we founded Hart & Hero, a company committed to bridging the gender play gap and promoting emotional wellbeing. Welcome.
